The project to commemorate the world's extinct species

I was deeply moved on learning of this brilliant, profound and ultimately humanitarian enterprise. It does the UK proud. I hope the US and others will follow suit.

Where

Despite calls for the monument to be sited either in central London or at the Eden project, the Isle of Portland has always been the preferred place to build it. An extraordinary site on the eastern cliffs has been offered for the monument, overlooking not only the 17th century quarry workings for the rebuilding of St.Paul’s Cathedral, but also the waters where the Olympic sailing events will take place in 2012.

Portland is an island of limestone connected to the south coast of England only by the bank of pebbles which comprises Chesil Beach. It is famous around the world as the source of the finest architectural stone.

The Sixth Extinction

With the Holocene Extinction Event we are currently witnessing the most rapid species decline in the Earth's history.

These are examples of large, photogenic and memorable species; current estimates are that half of all species will become extinct within a century.
