MEMO

The project to commemorate the world's extinct species

I was deeply moved on learning of this brilliant, profound and ultimately humanitarian enterprise. It does the UK proud. I hope the US and others will follow suit.

Building MEMO from the bottom up

The MEMO project has already begun. The first four carvings were on show at St. Paul’s Cathedral last summer before being exhibited at London Zoo. This summer they will be on display at Lyme Regis and on Portland. Soon a further six will be completed. The aim is to have the 800 carvings necessary to get the monument built up to date (together with the big bell and the education centre) by 2012 when the world’s journalists arrive on Portland for the Olympic sailing. To do this we need your help

The cost of the whole project is estimated at £5 million. The aim of the Founders Appeal is to raise the first £150,000 by June 2010.

Thanks to the generosity of our present Friends and Founders and of many volunteers and professionals working at risk we have been able to write a comprehensive business plan, as well as organising two successful festivals (another on the way…) and casting two bells on Portland. The public have had many opportunities to engage with the subject matter through carving, bell-ringing, theatre, and lecture programmes delivered by world names in the field. We have the support of the CBD and the IUCN, as well as the Royal Society, London Zoo, the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul’s and myriad businesses in Dorset, not to mention our world class list of patrons and trustees.

We now need to fund the processes of public consultation and the securing of planning permission for the monument, as well as the casting of the MEMO bell.

Bear witness to the loss of the world’s species and help defend those species at risk.

The Sixth Extinction

With the Holocene Extinction Event we are currently witnessing the most rapid species decline in the Earth's history.

These are examples of large, photogenic and memorable species; current estimates are that half of all species will become extinct within a century.
